My name is Andrea Morgan and I have been drawing and painting since I could pick up a pencil and a brush. I began taking private art lessons when I was 5 years old after my kindergarten teacher saw something in me and encouraged my parents to seek out further education in art for me.
I took numerous classes in a wide variety of media over the years, both in school and out, and eventually ended up at the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD). Life took a different route for me after a few years, and I got married and started a family. Art was put on hold for a while, as I focused on raising my 3 amazing children, though arts and crafts time at my house was always creative and fun!
Around 1998 I attended my first parade of homes show as a spectator and was awed by some of the faux finishes and murals I saw there. I went home with thoughts swirling in my head of – I can do that. I had never really paid attention to it before – decorative finishes on walls, but as my children grew and the demands of 24/7 motherhood to infants and toddlers began to lessen, the pull of art and doing something creative with it again began to resurface. So I started out by experimenting in my own home. Faux finishes in a bathroom and kitchen. A garden of soft colors and children running and playing in another bathroom. My son’s favorite animated characters on the wall of his bedrooms. Friends and neighbors would visit and ask me to do something in their homes. And by word of mouth my clientele began to grow.
In the beginning I focused mostly on Faux finishes as they were all the rage at the time. But slowly the murals began to take over. I began working with designers, and businesses and one fateful day I was asked to help paint on a huge project at a daycare. That project led to over 12 years of painting homes and daycare schools all over central Ohio and across the country, and the connections continue today. While I will still do the occasional simple faux finish, my area of expertise and my main focus now is creating murals. They are just so much more exciting and creative to do! I have recently started getting back into fine art as well. The call of the canvas, and pencil to paper has been strong this past year, and I am enjoying exploring that area for the first time in many many years.
From a simple pencil portrait of a beloved pet or loved one, to a complex mural of outer space…..the sky is the limit for me and Beyond the Canvas! If you can imagine it – I can create it for you!
